Thanos Hotel "Almyra" in Cyprus
At her birth, Aphrodite is said to have emerged from the sea in Paphos, a picturesque, modestly sized town of some 28,000 inhabitants in the Greek part of the island of Cyprus. The goddess of love, beauty and sensual desire had excellent reasons for her choice: this spot is simply divine.
Located directly on the seashore just a few minutes walking distance from the mythical birthplace is the hotel complex “Almyra” run by the Michaelides family. Built in the 1980s, the four-storey main building has been completely revamped on the inside. The outer shell is all that now remains of the original building.
The French interior designer Joëlle Pleot conceived the 158 rooms and suites in a contemporary, understated style. Her designs opted for clear-cut forms and high-quality materials, with a colour scheme in all the rooms of pale blue, grey and shades of brown. After a two-year period of refurbishment Almyra opened in 2004 as the island’s first design hotel.
Embedded in an eight-acre garden, the hotel is only a short distance from the harbour. The view over the sea from the flat veranda roofs of the “Kyma suites” of the 5-star hotel is breathtaking. From their spacious white private patios guests can hear the crashing waves (“kyma” in Greek) and peer directly down into the azure water.
You cannot help being captivated by Almyra’s easy-going and relaxed atmosphere – especially if you have a family. One of the two freshwater pools, for instance, was designed especially for children. From April through till the end of October and during the Christmas holiday season, junior guests are looked after by trained kindergarten staff in the “Smiling Dolphin Kiddies’ Club”. The “Kiddies Club” also offers special children’s menus, and now, since April 2007, there is also the “Baby Go Lightly” crèche for the very tiny ones (aged six months to four years).
But the grown-ups get their fair share of the fun too: whether it’s sailing, diving, windsurfing, tennis or fitness, the needs of guests with a passion for nature and sport are well attended to. On request there are also massage and wellness facilities available.
After a day’s sporting activities or excursions into the region you can enjoy the culinary pleasures of the hotel’s restaurants “Mosaics” (international cuisine, buffet, breakfast and dinner à la carte) and “Notios” (light food in the open air). The beach bar “Ouzeri” offers light Greek snacks for in-between.
The stylish design hotel impresses thanks to the beautiful setting, its special flair and Mediterranean hospitality.
Besides the Almyra, the Michaelides family also runs the luxury resort “Anassa” on the edge of the Akamas peninsula near Polis in western Cyprus.
